Functions and Physics

This resource looks at three areas of the physics curriculum where functions are used, creating an opportunity for cooperation between physics and mathematics teachers. This booklet serves as good preparation material for CPD work between departments.

Hooke’s Law and the idea of a function
Part one explores the data produced by an experiment investigating Hooke’s law. Measures, units and numbers are discussed along with the different kinds of numbers; counting, rational, integers, real. The document continues to discuss how students can analyse the numbers produced and form graphical representations.

Acceleration and the idea of a quadratic function
After a brief introduction there is a detailed explanation of an experiment which can be conducted by students to explore the idea of acceleration. Once the data has been tabulated there is much detail regarding how a quadratic rule can be found including highlighting complications that can arise.

The Mathematical concept of a function and the physical concept of resistance
Different circuits with different resistors are considered to investigate connections between resistance, voltage and current. Included is mention of Kirchoff’s Law and Ohm’s Law. The graphs produced by the data are considered including discussion of domains and ranges.

This resource is from the series ‘Co-operation between Science Teachers and Mathematics Teachers’ produced by the ISCU Committee on the Teaching of Science.
