Raising Achievement in Mathematics Project

This is the report, published in 1992, of RAMP, the Raising Achievement in Mathematics Project (1986-1989) led by Afzal Ahmed - a curriculum development research project funded by the DES. The project was primarily about influencing and developing teacher behaviour and knowledge to improve students’ learning. At the same time, the implementation of the change from O-level/CSE to GCSE was taking place and issues, such as the inclusion of coursework and investigative work which were also influencing teachers’ classroom practice, were supported by the project. This project followed on from LAMP (Low Attainers in Mathematics Project, 1983-1986) and was effectively a much larger roll out of the earlier program. It involved 34 local authorities organized into five regions; each region had a co-ordinator and typically two teacher-researchers released from each local authority for one day per week. The document is mainly of historical interest although a very large number of mathematics teachers at the time were influenced directly or indirectly by the involvement of colleagues. The list of guidance suggestions to teachers to raise attainment (the 24 items (a) to (x) on pages 19-21) resulting from the work of the project, remain as powerful today as then and are strongly recommended.
