Water jelly cubes experiment: teacher notes and worksheets
They start off as tiny little jelly cubes, just a few millimetres across. Put them in water and within a few hours they have grown to over 100 times their original size -Once they have grown to full size, the Water Jelly Cubes have a great texture. Children of all ages love to touch them. Place them in water and they become invisible! (They have the same refractive index as water.) You can even shrink them back to their original size. (Although you will have to be patient - this usually takes a couple of weeks.)
A fascinating example of a Reversible Change. The Water Jelly Cubes work in a similar way to growing toys, such as the Growing Alligator, but they grow much faster and their small size means that they pose a more interesting challenge to older pupils. Different worksheets allow pupils with a wide range of ages and abilities to take part in this experiment.
