Chemistry: principles and applications

An account of chemistry for students preparing for A levels and similar examinations. The authors worked closely with a consultative committee to ensure their ideas were workable in the classroom and matched the requirements of examinations, both as they are at present and as they are evolving.

Each chapter has a variety of devices to help the reader understand the subject. Introductory sentences explain the general thrust of what is to follow, and the text of each chapter is interspersed with examples, so that a particular point can be explained in more detail, a concept illustrated, or an application described.

Boxes are used to explain the background to the development of a concept, or to one of its modern applications in industry, medicine or some other aspect of everyday life.

Each chapter concludes with what is intended to be a handy revision aid - a summary of the points that have been made. There is also a collection of problems in each chapter to help the student grasp the subject fully.

A synopsis of the central points of the three parts of the book acts as a further revision aid - this includes the most important definitions and formulae from physical chemistry, a summary of useful facts in inorganic chemistry and some reaction schemes from organic chemistry.
