Inequalities

This unit from the Continuing Mathematics Project has been planned to help students learn how to handle inequalities, and how to represent them graphically. Students should be familiar with manipulating positive and negative numbers, representing equations of the form y + 3x = 6 as a graph and finding the solution of equations like 5x + 7 = 22 before working on this unit.

After completing the unit students should be able to:
(i) use the signs >, <, ≤, ≥ correctly
(ii) find the values of x which satisfy an expression of the type 2 < x ≤ 7 and 5 ≤ x ≤ 8 and express this in the form: 5 < x ≤ 7
(iii) find the solution of linear inequalities of the type 7 - 3x ≥ 4x + 3
(iv) represent in graphical form linear inequalities in one and two variables
(v) represent graphically a region which satisfies two or more simultaneous inequalities.
