A Level Student Booster - Representation of Numbers (Pre-event materials)

In this online session, you will learn about the representation of numbers by a computer. You will need to understand the representation of binary positive numbers and hexadecimal before starting this session. The session is aimed at A Level students in Year 12/13. The event recaps binary, hex and binary addition. It then looks at 2s complement representation including binary subtraction. It then considers ways a computer can represent floating point numbers.

By attending this event, you will:

  • Recap number systems used in computing and be able to perform basic arithmetic operations
  • Know the difference between signed and unsigned integers and be confident using them in operations
  • Understand why computers store numbers in floating point form and be able to carry out operations using this method

These materials are shared only with Isaac Computer Science Booster participants in accordance with the Isaac Computer Science Terms of Use policy here: https://isaaccomputerscience.org/terms?examBoard=all&stage=all
