Measuring tap water temperature using sugar
This video and worksheet set out a measurement challenge that can be carried out at home or in school. Students must measure the time taken to dissolve the same mass of sugar in room temperature water, cold tap water and hot tap water. By comparing their results to a graph, they should be able to find the approximate the temperature of the water. The students are encouraged to upload their results to the NPL website.
This resource could be used to introduce the topic of independent, dependent and control variables. The video also explains the results in terms of the particle model.
The report file looks at measurements collected by NPL and draws some conclusions.
