Surf and the Simpsons
California is one of the top surf locations in the world and also home to Universal Studios. This video from Teachers TV focuses on the protection of the coastline and Universals Studios' initiatives to become environmentally friendly.
Off shore oil drilling, polluted beaches and waste running into the sea present serious environmental and health problems on Calafornia’s coastline and surfers have responded by developing their own foundation to sustain the coastline.
Field coordinator Nancy Hastings explains the environmental hazards of plastics which can become part of the food chain in ocean ecosystems. Matt McClean, of the Surfrider Foundation, describes how pesticides, metals and bacteria accumulate in run-off water from cities and cause a health hazard to bathers.
Meanwhile on an average summer's day 30,000 visitors take tours of the Universal Studio sets and enjoy rides on themed attractions in the park. Alongside its mission to entertain, Universal has recently adopted a number of measures to become more environmentally friendly, including cleaner, greener attractions, like the new Simpsons ride. Their initiatives aim to conserve energy and reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
This programme is part of the Teachers TV series Sustainability in California, which showcases the ingenuity and cutting edge technology that California is applying to sustainability, clean energy, and biodiversity.
