Research at ISIS

The research section of the Living in a Materials World describes some of the projects undertaken by ISIS, an experimental facility at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. Particle accelerators at the facility produce beams of neutrons which can be used to study atomic and sub-atomic structures using neutron diffraction. This technique allows materials from a wide and sometimes surprising range of sources to be studied.

Research projects include:
* Where atoms are
* What atoms do
* Archaeology: illuminating the dark ages
* Engineering: taking the stress out of failure
* Superconductors: superconductors all in a spin
* Materials: carbon reaches 60
* Magnetic multilayers: metallic sandwiches
* Muons: where do muons fit in?
* Molecules: when size is everything

STFC is a part of the Research Councils UK (RCUK) partnership of research councils.
