Physics in Schools IV: Supply and Retention of Teachers

This report, produced by the Centre for Education and Emplyment Research (CEER), looks at specialist physics teacher supply and retention in English schools. Physics is at the sharp end of teacher recruitment. It is the subject that schools find most difficult to staff. Some schools do not teach it, and others that do, use non-physicists as teachers. Authored by Alan Smithers and Pamela Robinson, the report examines:
• the current availability of physics teachers
• recruitment and progress in teacher training
• uptake of teaching posts by students post-initial teacher training
• deployment in schools
• departures from the profession
