Exploring Ethical Issues in Dementia

The resource includes an adapted version of an ethical framework for dementia, and an accompanying set of scenarios to help people work through dilemmas that may arise in the context of dementia care. The worked example can be used as a starting point.

The resource consists of:

  • Introduction
  • Background: Looking at peoples' mental capacity and the role of advance decision-making and welfare attorneys.
  • An ethical framework: Six points which look at the facts and beliefs about dementia and the needs and well-being of those whose lives are affected by it.
  • Worked example: Describes an example of a situation, identifying the relevant facts, applying ethical values and comparing with other situations.
  • Scenarios: A number of scenarios for discussion. Each one describes a person with dementia and their carers and the issues to consider.

This teaching resource is based on the Nuffield Council on Bioethics's 2009 report Dementia: ethical issues.
