London Marathon - 21st April 2024

A collection of resources linked to the London Marathon that explore:-

  • the forces involved in running and specifically air resistance
  • the engineering involved in developing products such as advanced running shoes, or running blades for amputees and people born without legs, and sports wheelchairs.
  • maths problems linked to running a race such as finding out the probability, and in what sequence, they would expect the runners to finish and predicting when runners would lap another runner based on their speed and postilion along the route
  • designing a timer to record the time taken to run short distances
  • accurately measuring distances
  • designing an eye-catching costume to stand out in the crowd!

Running Shoes

Loughborough University's sports engineers are using additive layer manufacturing or '3D printing' to help build personalised running spikes. Andrea Vinet is a research student at the Sports Technology Institute and has been looking at the manufacturing and human performance testing of running shoes. Her aim is to...

Running Tracks

This Cre8ate maths activity gives the opportunity for accurate measurement, scale drawing and calculations involving pi. If there is access to a running track, students look at how the track is marked out and distances measured accurately for runners in each of the lanes. Alternatively, if a track is not available...

Representing: road race

This problem solving resource is intended to help students with recognizing and using proportional relationships, including through the use of graphs

Students are given information about a road race. They are presented with a map and information about the speeds of two runners. The race consists of four laps...

Winning Medals: Does Engineering Design Make a Difference?

This resource aims to give students the opportunity to investigate the impact of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) on wheelchair sport. Students create a presentation that provides a justified answer to the ‘big question’, does engineering design make a difference to a wheelchair athlete's...
