Resource pack for assessment for learning in mathematics
Assessment for learning, also referred to as formative assessment, is widely recognised as an important tool for improving the way in which students at all levels learn mathematics. It involves a number of simple principles and procedures aimed at obtaining frequent evidence in the course of a lesson of individual students' understanding and providing them with specific advice on how they can improve.
These techniques should become part of the daily classroom practice of every teacher and can lead to improvements in motivation as well as more effective learning. Assessment for learning stands in stark contrast to the current emphasis on narrowly focused preparation for tests and examinations which undermines, rather than boosts, the confidence of so many students and greatly detracts from their enjoyment of mathematics.
